The goal is to construct a new army building to house all students at KIM during initial training. It also involves housing a number of students from the technical part of Faculty of Military Sciences of the Netherlands Defense Academy.

The current alloy building is over 50 years old and there is overdue maintenance.

Bringing the building up to standard is not financially efficient. In addition, the available space is insufficient for the structural growth of the number of students from 330 to 380.

To this end, Defense is temporarily renting an army ship until no later than October 1, 2029. The rental of this is beyond the scope of the project and the project budget. It also involves housing a number of students from the technical part of Faculty of Military Sciences of the Netherlands Defense Academy.

De planning voorziet in oplevering van de nieuwe legering in het tweede kwartaal van 2028.

The project also includes the adaptation of one of the existing buildings on the KIM grounds where 100 study spaces will be created to separate living and studying during the very first phase of the program where students sleep in dormitories. This building is part of a protected cityscape and must therefore be preserved.

A vision for education at the Dutch Defense Academy (NLDA) is currently being developed.
The concept assumes an anticipated increase in students and describes the need to continue training in both Den Helder and Breda.

The exact number of students for both locations will only become apparent in the coming years. In a follow-up phase of this project, Industrial, Flexible and Remountable (IFR) construction is being investigated, which would allow relocation of the army building after a few years. This mitigates risks as a result of a possible relocation of the NLDA.

As far as the administrative agreement ‘development Maritime Cluster Den Helder’ is concerned, this project also gives substance and form to the element ‘personnel’ by realizing this alloy on the KIM outside the harbor area near the inner city of Den Helder.

This relocation strengthens the bond with the city and can thus contribute to the recruitment of personnel and the strengthening of education in the region.
